Troy Howard Chapman

Troy Howard Chapman, 69, passed away peacefully at Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish, SD on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
Troy was born December 23, 1956, in Hettinger, ND, to Howard Robert Jr. and Viola Bernice (Long) Chapman. He joined siblings, Keith, Roxanne (Sis/Roxie), Thomas (Tom), and later Mitchell (Mitch).
While in high school, Troy worked at Prairie Bowl and Lounge for his uncle, Jim Long. Following his graduation from Bison High School in 1976, he worked as a ranch and for multiple families in the Bison, Buffalo, and Meadow, SD, and Ismay, MT areas. He later joined his dad working for the South Dakota Department of Transportation in Buffalo, SD. Following that, he worked as a janitor for Tin Lizzie Casino in Deadwood, SD.
Troy was especially proud of his affiliation with the Northern Hills Training Center and employment with Treasures Thrift Store in Spearfish, SD where he worked for over 15 years. He was a valued employee and a familiar, friendly face to customers, coworkers, and friends alike. Troy deeply enjoyed his work there and cherished the friendships he formed with his coworkers and the community.
Troy loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures, including trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Iceland, a dude ranch Arizona, Niagara Falls, Norway, the Grand Canyon, Memphis (Graceland), Nashville, and Disneyland. Troy loved watching old western television shows, especially Gunsmoke, and listening to country music. His flip-phone was his connection to friends and family and he used it frequently. He kept everyone informed as to what was going on with the extended family.
Troy is survived by his brothers, Keith (Julie) of Spearfish, SD; Thomas (Tammy) of Glasgow, MT; Mitchell (Barb) of Spearfish, SD; and his sister Roxanne Anderson of Spearfish, SD/Benicia, CA. He is also survived by uncles, Edward (Violet) Chapman of Bison, SD; Lenard of Hettinger, ND, and Juell (Dolores) Chapman of Scottsbluff, NE; numerous cousins; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Troy was proceeded in death by his parents.
The family wishes to acknowledge all those who supported him at the Northern Hills Training Center, especially Alison, Bev, and Andrew. And to acknowledge his Treasurers Thrift Store family: Lisa, Megan, and Glenna.
The family thanks the staff at the Garden Hills Assisted Living Facility. Troy truly enjoyed his time there. And Monument Hospice who provided excellent comfort care.
The family also wishes to thank his long time, very special friends, Tacy and Jenny, who were always there for him…
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Services will be at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, SD. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish, SD.
